I just finished reading Sweetgrass Basket by Marlene Carvell, and wow what a powerful read. The story alternates between two Mohawk sisters who are send to a boarding school. Although I have read other accounts of "survivors" this book really struck a cord. The whole time you were waiting for the great break, escape, a caring teacher, a note from back home, when sadly, the book ends. The breakdown of a person, Mattie, is unfolded in this story. From a spunky girl, who does well in school, an accused thief, an attempted runaway, to a very sick and dying girl. The only glimmer of hope this book offers is that of the woven Sweetgrass basket, which like that Native culture has shown it can almost be destroyed, but will prevail.
